Super Blood Wolf Moon Over Maui

January 23, 2019

This past Sunday most of us saw a rare, beautiful evening show in the sky. Unfortunately east Maui had cloud coverage that made it impossible to see the eclipse. The images on the internet from this rare astronomical event are stunning.

This was the first and only total lunar eclipse of 2019. The only other lunar eclipse during the year, a partial lunar eclipse, will take place on July 16th and 17th.

The moon was at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, lighting up the night sky as a striking Super moon.

The eclipse then gave the moon a red glow, creating a phenomenon known as the Blood Moon.

January’s full moon has been known as a Wolf Moon for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations tracked the changing seasons by the lunar months rather than the solar calendar, naming the months after features they associated with the northern hemisphere seasons including howling wolves. These names are now used to identify the full moons.

Stargazers and astronomers were treated to a full moon, Wolf Moon, Super moon and a total lunar eclipse on Sunday, January 20, 2019
