We want to thank the many Kihei folks who are so generous.
Almost every day someone comes by, between 9am and 4pm here at 96 Kio Loop, to drop off nonperishable food for the Maui Food Bank.
Corky gets so excited with every donation. Today’s donations actually filled our barrel!!
Due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases here in Hawaii, our 14 day quarantine has been extended yet again. The governor has extended it to “at least” October 1st. As of mid September, it will have been 6 months since visitors are required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Obviously, the majority of them will just stay home or go somewhere else.
Even those residents with a 6 month emergency fund are feeling the extreme stress of little to no income.
Before COVID-19, the Maui Food Bank served approximately 10,000 people per month, this included individuals, families, kids, the ‘working poor’, seniors on fixed incomes, the homeless, and anyone at risk of going hungry in Maui County. During COVID-19, the number of people served per month has tripled at some of the regional distribution sites, and the amount of food distributed has exceeded 500,000 pounds per month.
The collection barrel at Kihei Rent A Car may be tiny compared to the 500,000 pounds MFB handles these past months, but we have seen first hand how every food item and every cent makes a difference.
We want to acknowledge the many
food pantries around the island that
are assisting Maui residents in need.
Hundreds of volunteers spend hours
sorting, prepping, delivering, and
serving food.
For this we are so very grateful.
