Maui visitors often ask us where to go for a good hike on the island. Popular hikes at 7 Pools, Twin Falls, Waihee Ridge, Makawao Forrest, and Kings Trail come up a lot in these conversations. But, since it’s not considered a hike, Thompson Road in Keokea rarely gets mentioned.

Thompson Road is not a hiking trail. It is a one lane road. But due to the vast, undeveloped open land around the road, as well as the amazing view of central Maui below, it is a local walking, jogging, and biking favorite. Whether you walk, jog or bike it, you will be in awe of the picturesque beauty all around. It’s like you are part of a painting.

It’s about a 3 mile round trip one lane road surrounded by miles of open pasture and rolling green hills.
Sunsets are spectacular from Thompson Road’s 3,000 foot elevation. Bring a jacket though since it can get chilly.

Upcountry is painted with beautiful blooming trees and flowers right now. Just driving around the Kula and Keokea area is such a spectacular visual treat.
